Yards Project, Cleveland Clinic, and the Dalad Group

Illustrious Gravitas was an exhibit hosted by the Yards Project at Worthington Yards, and was curated by the wondrous Liz Maugans, in late 2022. Like most Yards Project exhibits, it was great showcase of northeast Ohio talent, and I was grateful to be included.

3 pieces went to the Cleveland Clinic, and a 5’x5’ mixed media piece was purchased by the Dalad Group.

Grab All the Shiny Things IV, I, and III. Charcoal, graphite, paints, hydrangea petals, ginkgo leaf, mobile device fragments, photography, and glitter.

Coming Closer

Deer appear repeatedly across Coming Closer, from simple forms on the left, towards increasingly layered figures as they move across the piece, culminating in a suggestion of flowing water and rapids. The deer represent innocence—a familiar and instinctive connection to the natural world. The layers of paper, drawing, paint, and other marks contribute to a landscape that is recognizable but difficult to separate into distinct elements.

The work considers a future in which nature and technology approach a kind of singularity—an increasingly close convergence in which the distinction between the natural and technological worlds may eventually become imperceptible. Coming Closer is less of a particular landscape than it is a meditation on transition: the movement from innocence toward complexity, and from a recognizable natural world toward something that may ultimately be impossible to distinguish from what we create.

Mixed media: charcoal, graphite, acrylic and oil-based paint, spray paint, photography, and woodblock relief prints on various papers.
